their second swap in two days

ST. LOUIS - It didnt take Tony Cruz long to consider all of his home runs and rank his latest. Hes only had three in his 100-game career and the first two came on the road. Cruz hit a three-run homer and the St. Louis Cardinals connected three times, beating the Cincinnati Reds 8-4 on Saturday night and moving closer to their fourth straight playoff berth. "It was a really good feeling," said Cruz, who also had the first curtain call of his career. "The first one of the year is always a really good feeling and my first one at home. You know you hear the crowd. Its amazing." Milwaukee beat second-place Pittsburgh 1-0 on Saturday to give the St. Louis a 3 1/2-game lead in the NL Central. The Cardinals cut their magic number to one for clinching a post-season berth, and five for their second NL Central title in a row. Kolten Wong and Randal Grichuk also homered as St. Louis won for the seventh time in eight games. The Cardinals have hit five homers in the past two games, but have just 104 for the season — among the lowest total in the majors. Their lack of power has provided an ongoing issue manager Mike Matheny has had to address. "I like the home runs," Matheny said in his postgame interview. "You guys always accuse me of not liking them, but especially those three-runners that Tony did. We know we have the kind of team that can do that and its nice to see them." Cincinnatis four runs were as many as it scored in the previous five games. The Reds have lost six in row and has been outscored 30-8 in that stretch. They are 20-40 since the All-Star break. "Youre seeing us having to go out there and really struggle so mightily to try to find a way to win a ball game," manager Bryan Price said. "Certainly nobodys enjoying this current portion of our schedule. The way weve played for the last 60 games has been miserable." Jason Motte (1-0) needed just three pitches and one out to earn the win. He came in relief of starter Michael Wacha and got Todd Frazier to foul out to right. Wacha didnt qualify for the win because he lasted just 4 2-3 innings. He was seeking his first win since June 17 before going on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. Wacha gave up two runs and six hits on 78 pitches, the most since returning at the start of the month. "I felt a lot better, today," he said. "More secondary stuff was working for me. My command was a little bit better. I felt it was a step in the right direction." Mike Leake (11-13) allowed six runs in five innings. He also walked two and hit a batter, all of whom scored. He gave up two homers and has surrendered 22 this season. Cruz hit his first homer in more than a year, connecting in the second. His last home run was Aug. 4, 2013, at Cincinnati. Wong hit his 12th, a two-run shot in the third. Grichuck added a pinch-hit homer in the sixth — it was his third of the season and his second in two nights. Grichuck later added an RBI bloop double. Zack Cozart homered for the Reds and Kris Negron doubled twice. TRAINERS ROOM Cardinals: 1B Matt Adams and 3B Matt Carpenter both were out of the starting lineup with a stomach virus. Matheny said they were "quarantined," though it wasnt clear if they were at Busch Stadium and available or sent home. ... Star C Yadier Molina got his first start of the season. Reds: C Devin Mesoraco was pulled in the sixth inning because of a stomach bug. Price said Mesoraco could have continued but the manager didnt think it was worth it. UP NEXT Reds: RHP Alfredo Simon (14-10, 3.35) has given up five hits in seven innings during each of his past two starts, including in a 4-2 win against St. Louis on Sept. 10. The Cardinals have batted .228 in 101 at-bats against Simon over 22 2-3 innings. Cardinals: RHP Lance Lynn (15-9, 2.68) has given up two runs over his past 15 innings and went 0-1 in those games, including a 1-0 loss at Cincinnati on Sept. 11. He has a 2.00 ERA this month over four starts and goes after his fourth win against the Reds. He is 3-1 with a 3.12 ERA in four games against them division rivals this season. Ken Griffey Jersey . Alen, 28, hit .315 with five home runs, 59 RBI and a career-high nine stolen bases for the Goldeyes last season. He is the longest serving catcher in Goldeyes history, having already spent five seasons with the organization. Cheap Mariners Jerseys China . And Richard Bachman, their rookie goalie, is facing a penalty shot a few seconds after the opening face-off. No pressure, right? Bachman stood his ground against Zack Kassian and saw the puck dribble off the Canuck rookies stick, then settled in and backstopped the Stars to a 5-2 win over Vancouver Tuesday that put Dallas in first place in the Pacific Division. Berdych and Stepanek played all five matches when the Czechs beat Spain 3-2 in the final last November in Prague to win the countrys first title as an independent nation. Randy Johnson Jersey . The Maple Leafs will play on the road for the first time this season after dropping home contests to Montreal and Pittsburgh to begin the campaign. After losing a one-goal decision to the Canadiens on Wednesday, they were bested 5-2 on Saturday by the Penguins. Wholesale Mariners Jerseys . The teams were scoreless for most of the first two periods before Canada scored three times in a span of less than four minutes. Sarah Potomak opened the scoring on the power play.SAN DIEGO - The Dodgers acquired second baseman Howie Kendrick from the Los Angeles Angels and were working to obtain shortstop Jimmy Rollins from the Philadelphia Phillies in a remake of their middle infield. In a flurry of moves late Wednesday, the Dodgers dealt All-Star second baseman Dee Gordon, right-hander Dan Haren, infielder Miguel Rojas and a player to be named or cash to the Miami Marlins as part of a seven-player trade for left-hander Andrew Heaney, right-hander Chris Hatcher, infielder Kike Hernandez and catcher Austin Barnes. The Dodgers then sent Heaney, considered one of baseballs top pitching prospects, to the Angels for Kendrick. We started this off-season with a really good base of talent in place coming off an extremely successful NL West division championship, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said early Thursday. But as we looked at it and tried to figure out different ways that we can continue to improve the roster, we felt like there were certain areas we could target and certain guys that fit within the scope of what we were trying to do.Friedman wouldnt say how close he was to finalizing a trade for Rollins or a $48 million, four-year contract with free-agent pitcher Brandon McCarthy. The Dodgers also have been talking about dealing outfielder Matt Kemp to San Diego. The 31-year-old Kendrick has spent all nine of his big league seasons with the Angels. He hit .293 this year with seven homers, 75 RBIs and 14 steals. Kendrick has a $9.5 million salary next year and then can become a free agent.Kendrick was selected to his only All-Star team in 2011, and he has been a steady bat in Los Angeles lineup for six consecutive seasons. Kendrick and shortstop Erick Aybar have been the Angels double-play combination for the past half-decade.Itll be difficult to replace Howie, Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said. We just felt like one year of control on Howie as a pending free agent at the end of the 15 season was impossible to walk away from Andrew Heaney and six years of control, and what we think is a left-hand starter who has top-of-the-rotation upside. To help make up for the loss of Kendrick, the Angels acquired 25-year-old infielder Josh Rutledge from the Colorado Rockies for minor league right-hander Jairo Diaz. In 266 games over three seasons, Rutledge is a .259 hitter with 19 homers and 89 RBIs.Rollins, the 2007 NL MVP, would take over at shortstop for Hanley Ramirez, who signed an $88 million, four-year contract with Boston. The 36-year-old Rollins has spent his entire 15-year career with the Phillies, becoming a three-time All-Star and helping Philadelphia win the 2008 Worrld Series title.dddddddddddd.Rollins hit .243 last season with 17 homers and 55 RBIs.Rollins is owed $11 million next year in the final season of a contract that started in 2012. As a 10-year veteran who has spent five seasons with his current team, Rollins cannot be traded without his consentThe 26-year-old Gordon led the major leagues last season with 12 triples and 64 stolen bases, mostly batting leadoff for the Dodgers. He hit .289 with two homers, 92 runs, 34 RBIs and a .329 on-base percentage. He joins a batting order that includes NL home run champion Giancarlo Stanton, given a record $325 million, 13-year contract. Our goal was to add another bat. Dee wasnt exactly the bat we were expecting to add, Marlins general manager Mike Hill said. But when you can access that type of game-changing speed, for who we are, we just thought it made a lot of sense.Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria called it lightning and thunder. Its going to be a lot of fun, he said after using an old-fashioned flip phone to take photos of Hill holding a news conference in the lobby of the winter meetings hotel. All weve got to do is play well and start to win, and people will be responsive.Haren went 13-11 with a 4.02 ERA as the NL West champion Dodgers No. 4 starter. He is owed $11 million for next season and said last month he might retire if traded away from the area.Im taking my talents to bed. Long day, he tweeted.Hernandez made his big league debut this year, playing 42 games for Houston and Miami. He hit .248 in 42 games with three homers and 14 RBIs.Hatcher has appeared in 81 games over four seasons and is 0-4 with a 4.80 ERA.Heaney, a 23-year-old left-hander, made his big league debut for the Marlins in June and was 0-3 with a 5.83 ERA in five starts and two relief appearances. He humorously tweeted: Well, @Dodgers we had a good run! Great to be a part of such a storied franchise. #thanksforthememories, then added: Cant wait to join the @Angels and get started with an amazing Org. Thank you for this opportunity and lets go Halos!!!Barnes, 24, split the season between Class A and Double-A.The southern California neighbours made their second swap in two days. On Tuesday, the Angels received catcher Drew Butera from the Dodgers for a player to be named or cash. After five straight NL East titles from 2007-11, the Phillies dropped to .500 in 2012, then to 73-89 records in each of the last two seasons. Philadelphia finally seems ready to jettison some of its old core and start rebuilding.NOTE: The Dodgers designated catcher Ryan Lavarnway for assignment.___AP Sports Writers Ronald Blum and Greg Beacham contributed to this report.
